Larvae Who Lunch…

London is being ravaged by a plague of moths and their feisty offspring. Friends of ours were continually lamenting, this past summer, how their wardrobes were being devoured by these annoying critters. Clothes Moth’s larvae are attracted to the keratin in natural fibres, wool and cashmere, and you need a strong barrier between them and your prized knitwear to stop them having a free lunch and leaving unsightly holes.

One of nature’s least welcome visitors, the Clothes Moth (Tineola Bisselliella) is most active in the warmer months. It likes dark, warm, humid spaces, and dirty clothing – especially unwashed items that may have lingering body oils or food residue. They are repelled by the oil in cedar wood and will not lay their eggs when the fragrance is prominent.

Each Hand and Jones knitwear purchase comes with a clear, branded, 100% recycled plastic zip lock bag and as well as a small cedar wood block that includes a length of spare yarn*.  Not just packaging, we recommend keeping your knitwear clean and storing it in the bag, along with the cedar block, at all times when not wearing.  Should the worst happen, the yarn will help with any mending or repairs that may be needed over the many years we hope you will continue to wear your Hand and Jones sweater.
